Chip maker Nvidia has agreed to buy UK based Arm for $40 billion. Arm is a computer chip company that was bought by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group four years ago for $32 billion.
Arms Holdings provides power to mobile processors for companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm. Nvidia has said it will invest heavily to give the combined companies a head start on the next stage of AI computing, an area of growth which is critical for both companies.
The deal is crucial for SoftBank which has been selling off companies to finance share buybacks, debt repayment, and to increase its cash balance. It’s especially important considering the reputational damage SoftBank incurred after a number of recent ill-fated investments.
